The Dead Crow by A. Samad Said

Reflection:
As a typical citizen in one of the bustling cities in Malaysia, I also have the same pleas or demand as of Mr.  A. Samad Said. Air pollution is common in places where fume are rolling out of the exhaust of cars and of factories. The fresh air I breathe in my childhood is no longer there. The destruction of rain forest by loggers make things worse and there seem to be no end to the destruction of the rain forest. Is it too much to ask for our children, the elderly and all the wild life to have good quality air when the demand for energy is at all time high?

Theme: Nature and the environment, effects of pollution, concern for future generation.

Persona: A person who is worried about the deteriorating state of the earth and the human race due to human activities.

Point of View: 1st stanza = 3rd Person point of view & 2nd Stanza = 1st person point of view

Tone and Mood: Troubled, Angry, and Frustrated

Moral Values:
·         Pollution effects the people
·         Excessive development destroys the earth
·         Nature should be preserved for the future generation

Literary Devices
1. Symbolism
Dead crow – serious effects of pollution

2. Imagery
Vivid description of old man and baby having trouble breathing for readers to imagine the situation
3. Repetition

The phrase “I want” was repeated 3 times to give emphasis on what the author desires, and demanding.
